STARSkate gives skaters the opportunity to develop their figure skating skills through progressive training, achievement and recognition. From skating skills and ice dance to free skate and artistic performance, skaters can continue building confidence on the ice while working toward personal goals.
A Pathway for Growing Figure Skaters
STARSkate is Skate Canada’s figure skating development program for skaters who are ready to progress beyond foundational learn-to-skate skills.
Training is progressive and sequential, allowing skaters to develop at their own pace while working toward recognized achievements. Skaters can participate in assessments, competitions and other skating opportunities as their skills and interests grow.

Four Areas of Development
STARSkate develops well-rounded figure skaters through four areas of training. Each area builds different technical and performance skills, giving skaters opportunities to discover their strengths and pursue their own skating goals. gives skaters the flexibility to grow at their own pace and pursue the parts of figure skating that inspire them most. Along the way, they’ll build confidence, celebrate achievements and discover new opportunities on and off the ice.

STAR 1-5
Led by NCCP-certified Skate Canada coaches, the STAR 1-5 curriculum is Canada’s premier figure skating program. It lays the groundwork for future champions in singles, pairs, ice dance, and synchronized skating by introducing participants to all the figure skating essentials.
We welcome skaters of all ages, including adaptive skaters who have met the required skill development level. All students must have completed CanSkate Stage 6 or an equivalent to enroll.
STAR 6
STAR 6-Gold is an assessment and event framework program designed for skaters who have completed the STAR 1-5 curriculum. It pushes your skills to the next level, building on what you’ve already learned while introducing exciting advanced figure skating elements.

Frequently asked Questions
- All skaters up to Stage 5 inclusive MUST wear a CSA approved hockey helmet. A cage is recommended for all skaters. Bike, ski and skate/snowboarding helmets are NOT allowed.
- Warm Layers – splash pants over warm pants (no snowpants), a warm sweater and outer jacket (not too bulky)
- Mittens/gloves are needed on the ice. (Please no CHENILLE gloves)
- Elbow and Kneepads are not necessary
The most important piece of equipment; these are an investment in a skater’s career and require continual care to keep the skater safe.
Good skates should meet the following criteria:
- Fit properly, standing straight, ankles not bending inward our outward
- Have laces (no buckels or velcro)
- Avoid plastic skates
- Be sharpened (by a professional), blades dried off after each use and use soft guards to protect the blade in your bag when not in use.
- Keep toe picks on figure skates – do not grind them off.
All skaters must be registered with Skate Canada before taking to the ice. The annual membership fee is $62.70 for the 2025-2026 season in Ontario. Annual Skate Canada Membership and Insurance is valid from September 1 to August 31. This fee is 100% non-refundable.

Skate Canada National Registrant Fee: $28.00
Sectional Portion (Ontario): $29.00
Safe Sport Fee: $5.00
Injury Benefit Fee: $0.70
Each participant will have an administration fee of $20 added to their invoice in addition to the Skate Canada Fee. This yearly fee is needed for the cost of items such as badges and ribbons, equipment (noodles, balls, cones) etc. The fee is also used for our board insurance, accounting fees, and any other additional costs we may incur. 100% of the program fees that are listed in the cost of registration only covers the cost of ice and coaching. This fee may change year over year due to fluctuating costs and possible sponsorships.
